The NEON Research Support Services (NRSS) program provides elements of NEON's infrastructure to community members, aiding their research and other activities. Through the NRSS program, NEON functions as an easily accessible research platform for Principal Investigator-initiated studies and environmental investigations. This encompasses access to NEON's infrastructure, on-site coordination, and a skilled workforce of field ecologists, engineering, and scientific personnel. NRSS projects are mainly cost-recoverable and subject to resource availability.

During this workshop we’ll be doing a scavenger hunt using the National Microbiome Data Collaborative’s (NMDC) Data Portal, and attendees will learn about programmatic data access via NMDC’s API. The workshop will focus on metadata and data search for soil samples collected from NEON sites.

Workshop Description

This Data Skills Webinar Series workshop will demonstrate working with NEON Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) discrete-return lidar point cloud data to explore change detection in vegetation structure following a wildfire disturbance.

The Creek Fire was a large wildfire which started in September, 2020, in the Sierra National Forest, California, and became one of the largest fires of the 2020 California wildfire season. This fire had burned into NEON's Soaproot Saddle site (SOAP) by mid-September, resulting a high intensity burn scar over a large portion of the site.

The NEON Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) conducted aerial surveys for the SOAP site in 2019 and 2021, a year before and after the Creek Fire. The goal of this lesson is to demonstrate the effects of fire on vegetation structure by comparing the lidar-derived relative height percentiles before (2019) and after (2021) the fire. In addition to the discrete return data, this webinar demonstrates using a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) to determine the relative height of the discrete return with respect to ground.

This workshop will cover downloading NEON Aquatic Instrument System (AIS) data using the neonUtilities R package, and basic instruction in exploring and working with the downloaded data. This includes guidance in navigating data documentation, separating data using the horizontal location (HOR) variable, interpreting quality flags, and resampling time intervals.

Workshop Description

This workshop will introduce the Ecological Forecasting Initiative Research Coordination Network’s (EFI-RCN) National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Forecast Challenge, and provide you with all of the information and materials so that you can start submitting to the Challenge! Challenge materials include easy-to-use software, tools, and templates that have been developed in the R programming language. We will provide an example forecasting workflow in R to follow-along and provide assistance to participants to set up their own forecasting workflow. If time permits, workflow automation will also be introduced.

AG��˰ټ��ֹٷ��վ NEON MDPs

NEON maintains a fleet of five Mobile Deployment Platforms (MDPs) which can be delivered to PI-chosen sites across landscapes in the U.S. MDPs use the same sensors, processing algorithms, and data QA/QC criteria as standard NEON sites, but can be rapidly deployed to recent disturbance events or ongoing research projects. Essentially, each MDP is a personalized NEON site allowing external researchers to collect standardized NEON data (atmospheric, terrestrial, aquatic) at the location of their choosing.

Each of NEON’s five MDPs consists of a core supporting infrastructure for deploying sensors in terrestrial and/or aquatic environments. Core infrastructure includes:

Rohn25G tower that can be configured for various heights up to 100 feet
Mobile instrument support hut housed on a trailer
Ability to tie into on-site power
Ability to link to remote network communications (e.g., cellular network, satellite)
A configurable array of atmospheric, aquatic, and soil sensors
Ability to incorporate additional PI instrumentation

A deployed MDP is maintained by NEON science and engineering teams for the duration of the campaign. Data collected by MDPs are processed by the NEON program and delivered to the research team. NEON also provides MDP users with a customized data skills workshop to assist faculty and students in fully leveraging data collected by the MDP and the broader network.

Under our mandate from the National Science Foundation (NSF), MDPs are deployed on a cost recoverable basis - NEON must recoup base costs for deployments. For this reason, external funding is required for researchers requesting deployment of an MDP. Funding can be sought through opportunities from several agencies, including NASA (e.g., ROSES, Terrestrial Ecology Program), USDA, and NSF (e.g., RAPIDs for quick turnaround for studying disturbance events or EAGERs).

We can provide detailed costs, planning and technical assistance, and Letters of Support to accompany any proposal submissions.
