As part of an NSF AccelNet award focused on harmonizing drought data, the Global Ecosystem Research Infrastructure (GERI; https://global-ecosystem-ri.org/about/) is conducting a study to better understand the technical skills and training opportunities to prepare the next generation of environmental scientists. NEON, a member of GERI, provides support for GERI research about leveraging data provided by research infrastructures and networks. If you are an environmental science researcher, please consider contributing to the dataset by taking this survey and distributing the survey to your networks. The survey will be open until May 31, 2025.

MEFA Virtual Event: Storytelling with Community Engaged Research

Join MEFA in its fourth virtual event highlighting the use of stories to make authentic connections in community engaged research. The event will provide participants with tips for putting their science into a narrative to better connect to their audience and begin to build genuine relationships. The event will begin with a one-hour workshop that includes best practices for crafting narratives, led by Bethann Garramon Merkle, an expert in science communication and engagement. The workshop will be followed by a twenty-minute presentation by Dr. Na’Taki Osborne Jelks, highlighting how one can successfully engage the community in their ecological research with an example from her work. The last ten minutes will allow time for Q&A.

Join the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Pacific daylight time on March 14, 2023 for the live launch of the national Molecular Observation Network (MONet) initiative. Hear from the Department of Energy, Office of Science Director Dr. Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, EMSL researchers, and initiative collaborators who will talk about how MONet will advance climate science research and how to get involved. EMSL is accepting soil samples to collect data on the composition and structure of soil, water, and resident microbial communities from across the U.S. This data will be made publicly available through a cutting-edge, searchable database linked to analytics tools. The National Ecological Observatory Network cordially invites the Allenspark, Colorado community to join our field staff for a meet and greet and presentation and forum.

Learn more about the National Ecological Observatory Program (NEON) field site at the Leiffer Propery in Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest and enjoy complimentary snacks and refreshments with your community!

Since 2012, the NEON team has been monitoring and sampling environmental data in Allenspark. Data on climate and precipitation, habitat structure, organismal populations, and soil biogeochemistry of the soil are being collected from the site to better understand why and how this ecosystem is changing.

This open house will help inform the public of our efforts here prior to our tower permit renewal process with National Park Service for an additional 20 years.

"Live from the Field" events are 50-minute events where researchers with three field sites describe their interests and research in 8-minute videos, then participants join a live moderated Q&A session with the researchers. Events are recorded for asynchronous instructional use, and available to all at thevirtualfield.org/virtual-visits/live-from-the-field

In this event, researchers will talk about their work on tracking stocks and changes of forest carbon with remote sensing, soil carbon cycling and soil carbon-climate feedbacks, and measuring and modeling carbon cycle changes. This event is geared toward undergraduate level college students who have taken at least one Biology course, but all are welcome.

“Live from the Field�� events are international collaborations led by the Center for Environmental Inquiry that give students virtual field experiences in ecosystems all over the world. Events are informal and open to everyone to generate opportunities to speak with researchers and develop a personal interest in doing research. All are welcome. Come meet the NEON field science team for Hawaii at Ohia Love Fest. This free public event is designed to bring awareness of the fungus that causes Rapid Ohia Death, a disease that is killing the most important and dominant tree species in Hawaii.

We will host a booth to describe the work NEON conducts in Hawaii and highlight the importance of the ohia tree to Hawaii’s forests.
